Congratulations and welcome to Bioner!

What to do before and during the academic year?

During summer

  • Accept the offered degree position and pay the membership fee to the  student union. 

  • Find an apartment! TOAS and POAS offer affordable apartments for students. 

  • Order a student card. With student card you can get discounts all over the city and also have access to the campus 24/7

  • Get in touch with your tutor! They’ll help you with your arrival to Finland in  any way they can. This may include picking up your keys, picking you up from  the airport or centre, and showing you your apartment, campus and shops  near you. 

  • Consider getting a Nysse card (public transportation card)

During semester

Orientation week is August 18th to 24th 2025 and before that you can get to know fellow freshmen and tutors in the kickstart on Sunday 17th of August 2025 at 6 PM at the Hervanta Campus front lawn.

During orientation week there are all kinds of fun events together with all freshmen in the evenings organized by tutors. During daytime, we will choose courses and get to know the campus with tutors as well as have some info events. All you need to do is show up – tutors will guide you around the campus.

Vocabulary

Guild (fi: kilta) is a student organization that brings together students studying the same field. Guild organizes events for its members and takes care of its students’ rights. Guild of biotechnology and biomedical engineering students is Bioteekkarikilta Bioner ry, shorter ”Bioner”.

Fuksi is a first-year university student. Freshman is not a commonly used word in Tampere and instead this word, fuksi, is used.

Teekkari is an engineering student that has taken part of the teekkari dipping, which is a tradition within engineering students of Tampere during 1st of May.

Guildroom (fi: kiltahuone) is a hangout space for guild members. Bioner’s guildroom is located in the cellar of the main building (Päärakennus) and there you can for example buy snacks or see upcoming events.

Overalls (fi: haalarit) are students’ favorite outfit in almost any event. Students of the same field have overalls of the same colour. Bioner’s overalls are champagne gold and they have a hood with a white fur.

Reseptori is Bioner’s guild magazine that is published three times a year. During summer, Fuksireseptori is published and it contains content that is intented for freshmen.

Tutors and fuksi responsibles take care of first-year students and organize events for them.
